'Mosquito Live' Experience - New for 2019
27-28 September 2019
The only 'live' de Havilland Mosquito Experience available in the world!
Twynhams Tours are pleased to announce a very special one-off experience - 'Mosquito Live'. This 2-day self-drive tour is only available to a limited number of guests and we only have one event planned in 2019.
The de Havilland DH.98 Mosquito with it's twin Rolls Royce Merlin engines, uncluttered lines, U-Boat sinking firepower and pinpoint bombing accuracy became one of the aviation success stories of WWII. Unusually its frame was constructed almost entirely of wood and that's where it gets its nickname 'The Wooden Wonder', or 'Mossie' to its crews.
In 1941 it was one of the fastest operational aircraft in the world. Originally conceived as an unarmed fast bomber, the Mosquito's use evolved during the war into many roles, including low to medium-altitude daytime tactical bomber, high-altitude night bomber, pathfinder, day or night fighter, fighter-bomber, intruder and maritime strike aircraft. The crew of two, pilot and navigator, sat side by side, but a single passenger could ride in the aircraft's bomb bay when necessary.
The 'Wooden Wonder' - Clean lines, lightweight and enormous power, the perfect combination!
The Mosquito was often flown in special raids, such as Operation Jericho – an attack on Amiens Prison in early 1944 and precision attacks against military intelligence, security and police facilities (such as Gestapo headquarters). On the 10th anniversary of the Nazis' seizure of power in 1943, a perfectly timed Mosquito attack knocked out the main Berlin broadcasting station while Hermann Göring was speaking, putting his speech off the air.
Twynhams Tours are giving you the unique opportunity, as part of our exclusive group, to immerse yourself in 2-days of 'Mossie Magic'. Not only will you hear the twin Rolls Royce Merlin engines running up and have a cockpit tour from the crew ladder, you will enjoy a private screening of '633 Squadron'. This iconic war film is the ultimate tribute to the Mosquito and its theme tune is one of the most recognisable ever written.
We will be having dinner and spending the night at the famous Petwood Hotel in Woodhall Spa. From January 1944, the Petwood became the officers' quarters for 617 'Dambusters' Squadron when they were posted to the nearby Bomber Command station at Woodhall Spa.
After a hearty 'full English' breakfast it's time to head down to North London and the de Havilland aircraft Museum at Salisbury Hall, where the Mosquito was designed back in the late Thirties. Here you will enjoy a private guided tour and get to see three original Mosquitos, including the prototype, this aircraft is the only surviving World War II prototype to be preserved in the World.
Friday. Your Tour starts at 10.00hrs with arrival tea/coffee and biscuits and then moves on to a detailed briefing from one of the crew members about the days itinerary. Next up is the 'live' action with a full engine run, your chance to hear the Rolls Royce Merlins in all their glory.
