Silverstone F1™ World Championship race - What happened in 2021?
Weekend format: The 2021 British Grand Prix was the first race to implement the new sprint-qualifying format. Usually, Friday would host two practice sessions. Saturday would have the final practice and then qualifying in the afternoon. Sunday would have one session, the 305 km race. The sprint qualifying changes this format, and on Friday there would be one practice session in the early afternoon and a traditional qualifying (to determine the sprint-qualifying starting order) in the evening. On Saturday, the second practice would take place, with a newly added sprint race happening in the afternoon. Sunday is unchanged.
Qualifying: Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time in qualifying, giving him pole for sprint qualifying ahead of Verstappen in second and his teammate, Bottas in third.
Sprint qualifying: Racing over just seventeen laps and Hamilton lost out at the start with Verstappen overtaking him to take the lead. Verstappen had had trouble getting his car's tyres up to temperature in the cooler temperatures of qualifying, but it was much warmer for the sprint, and he cruised to an easy victory.
The Race: Hamilton had a better start than Verstappen, and they ran side by side through the first corner, each contesting the lead throughout the first half of the lap. Then at Copse Corner Hamilton and Verstappen collided with each other, Verstappen slid across the gravel trap and hit the tyre wall at 180 mph. The race was suspended while Verstappen's car was removed, and the tyre wall repaired. Hamilton received a ten-second time penalty for causing the collision.
In the meantime, Charles Leclerc took the lead, before the race was neutralised. Hamilton pitted from second, served his ten-second time penalty and came back out fourth. He quickly dispatched Norris's McLaren and then Bottas. Hamilton passed Leclerc, on lap 50, for the lead and was never headed again, taking a decisive victory, in front of his adoring home fans.
Lewis Hamilton bounced back from a first lap crash with Max Verstappen to take a dominant victory at his home circuit
F1™ British Grand Prix - Silverstone 2022
The British Grand Prix has produced some of Grand Prix racing's most historic and memorable races. Silverstone hosted the first Grand Prix championship race in May 1950, won by Giuseppe Farina in an Alfa Romeo. It has held all but 17 of the British GP races since then and remains one of the fastest, most exciting and challenging events in the world. The atmosphere is unbeatable and with capacity crowds it's all set to be an amazing 2022 Formula One™ British Grand Prix.
